Eye Focus & Expression Detection

Verify sub-pixel eyelash sharpness, detect closed-eye blinks, evaluate peaceful newborn sleeping states, and handle sports eyewear with accuracy.

A closed eye or awkward mid-blink expression ruins an otherwise well-composed portrait. BestShots analyzes high-resolution facial crops centered on detected subjects to evaluate critical eye engagement:

  • Eyelid Position Verification: Measures upper and lower eyelid separation against natural facial proportions to flag inadvertent blinks.
  • Corneal Catchlight Detection: Confirms the presence of reflected catchlights in the pupils to verify direct camera engagement and visual life in the eyes.
  • Authentic Smile Discrimination: Distinguishes natural smiling eye crinkles (crinkled eye corners associated with genuine laughter) from accidental squints or grimaces.

Sub-Pixel Eyelash & Iris Sharpness

When shooting with fast prime lenses at wide apertures (such as f/1.2 or f/1.4), depth of field is razor-thin:

  1. Nearest-Eye Priority: Focus verification automatically checks the eye closest to the camera plane.
  2. Focus Shift Detection: Accurately flags front-focus or back-focus errors where an earring, hairline, or shirt collar is sharp while eyelashes are soft.
  3. Motion Blur Discrimination: Separates optical defocus from slow shutter motion blur, helping you identify frames that are crisp enough for large-format prints.

Sleeping Newborn Heuristic

In newborn and infant photography (under the Newborn shoot profile), closed eyes indicate tranquil, peaceful sleeping states rather than inadvertent blinks.

The evaluation engine automatically recognizes the newborn context:

  • Suspends Blink Penalties: Closed eyes are never penalized or flagged as rejections for newborn shoots.
  • Serene Expression Priority: Evaluates peaceful expressions, relaxation in facial muscles, and absence of distress or crying.
  • Skin Texture & Soft Light: Assesses delicate skin tone rendition and soft studio lighting falloff.

Sports & Outdoor Eyewear Overrides

Photographers capturing beach weddings, cycling races, skiing, or outdoor sports frequently photograph subjects wearing dark sunglasses, visors, or tinted goggles.

When sport-appropriate eyewear is detected, BestShots adapts immediately:

  • Bypasses Obscured Eye Penalties: Frames are not penalized for hidden pupils or covered eyes.
  • Alternative Focus Targeting: Targets optical sharpness verification on visible anatomical edges: smile lines, nose bridge, jawline definition, or helmet contours.
  • Decisive Posture & Moment: Emphasizes body language, athletic timing, and action freezing rather than obscured facial landmarks.

RAW Developer Salvageability Assessment

Not every imperfect exposure deserves rejection. BestShots evaluates whether technical imperfections can be rescued during raw development:

  • Salvageable Candidates: Minor exposure errors (such as half a stop underexposed) or slight compositional imbalances that can easily be perfected with Lightroom exposure sliders or moderate cropping.
  • Unrecoverable Rejects: Optical motion blur from camera shake, missed focus where the background is sharp but the subject is entirely soft, or blown highlights clipped across facial skin tones.
