AI Culling & Shoot Profiles

Shoot Profile Calibrations & Evaluation Criteria

Explore the 9 photography shoot profiles, normalized 8-point evaluation weights, and genre-specific culling tolerances tailored to your specialty.

Context-Aware Quality Standards

A sports photographer capturing a high-speed basketball drive values decisive moment timing and frozen shutter motion, tolerating higher ISO sensor noise. Conversely, an architectural real-estate photographer prioritizes vertical perspective, window pull exposure balance, and spotless cleanliness, where human emotion carries zero relevance.

To eliminate generic culling decisions, BestShots implements 9 Authoritative Photography Shoot Profiles. Each profile establishes customized 8-point evaluation weights and domain-specific tolerances tailored to the distinct demands of your craft.

The 9 Authoritative Photography Shoot Profiles

Every shoot in BestShots is mapped to one of nine standardized shoot profiles:

8-Point AI Evaluation Criteria

All photos are evaluated across 8 normalized criteria scored on a 1 to 5 scale (1 = poor, 3 = acceptable, 5 = excellent):

  1. Subject Focus: Critical focus on the primary subject (eyes and face for people, hero product elements for commercial, key foreground for landscape).
  2. Expression & Moment: Authentic facial expression, decisive moment timing, eye openness, and emotional gestures.
  3. Dynamic Range & Exposure: Exposure balance across midtones, highlight recoverability, and shadow detail preservation.
  4. Composition & Framing: Visual balance, horizon alignment, leading lines, headroom, and framing intent.
  5. Color Fidelity & Skin Tones: Accurate white balance and natural skin tone rendition under challenging ambient and artificial lighting.
  6. Motion Control & Freeze: Controlled subject movement and camera steadiness, penalizing unintended hand shake or motion blur.
  7. Noise & Grain Control: Low ISO noise, clean shadow gradation, and absence of compression artifacts.
  8. Clean Background: Spotless backgrounds, absence of sensor dust, edge intrusions, and distracting elements.

Normalized Criterion Weight Distribution

Weights strictly sum to 1.00 across all 8 criteria for each shoot profile:

Domain-Specific Evaluation Tolerances

In addition to proportional weights, each shoot profile incorporates specialized domain heuristics to prevent false rejects:

Protective Sports Eyewear Exception

In sports and outdoor disciplines (such as cycling, skiing, tennis, motorsport, and beach volleyball), athletes frequently wear sunglasses, visors, tinted shields, goggles, or helmets. The AI evaluation engine does not penalize frames for hidden eyes when sport-appropriate eyewear is detected. Focus sharpness is assessed on the visible face (nose, cheekbones, jaw), helmet, or body, while expression scoring evaluates posture, athletic intensity, and decisive timing.

Sleeping Newborn Expressions

In newborn photography, closed eyes indicate serene sleeping states rather than accidental blinks. The AI model bypasses blink rejection heuristics for the Newborn profile, evaluating gentle skin texture, peaceful demeanor, and soft studio lighting.

Architectural & Real Estate Precision

For real estate and architectural photography, human presence is irrelevant (Expression: 0.00, Motion: 0.00). Scoring prioritizes vertical perspective correction, level horizons, clean background corners, and window pull dynamic range balance between interior and exterior exposures.

Automated Profile Calibration & Quality Guarantees

Rather than using a generic, one-size-fits-all scoring algorithm, BestShots applies the exact criterion weights defined by your selected profile to every photo in the shoot:

  • Mathematical Normalization: Because criterion weights strictly sum to 1.00 in all 9 profiles, score calculation remains normalized between 20 and 100 regardless of which genre is selected.
  • Repeatable Accuracy: The culling engine deterministically applies these weights across all images in your catalog, ensuring that a sports shot is never penalized for background motion blur, and a wedding portrait is rewarded for genuine smiles and sharp eyelashes.
  • Balanced Baseline: Shoots created without a specific profile safely fall back to the balanced Other profile, ensuring consistent baseline evaluation.

Managing Shoot Profiles in Your Studio Catalog

Photographers interact with shoot profiles across three key surfaces:

  1. Project Creation (/projects/new): Select from the 9 visual selection cards with live weight distribution visualizations and curation journey previews on the desktop workstation layout.
  2. Project Settings (/projects/[projectId]/settings): Modify the shoot profile post-creation in the Project Settings panel. The panel displays real-time weight distribution bars and top culling priorities for complete transparency.
  3. Dashboard Filtering (/projects): Filter your project catalog using the Shoot Profile filter tabs, displaying live computed project counts for each genre alongside search and starred filters.
